If you are learning how to install flooring, practicing with a small section first is helpful. Whether you are working on how to install new flooring or want to know how to install floating floors, always follow safety steps. Beginners often ask about installing floating floor systems because they are easier and quicker compared to glue-down methods.
How to Install Floating Floors
Remove the quarter round or baseboard first. Lay the underlayment across the length of the room and cut it to size.
Special note: Place the plastic side down when laying the foam mat, and tape the seams for a watertight seal.
Next, begin laying laminate boards. Start with a full board, measure, and make cuts using a miter saw.
Caution: Always use safety equipment such as safety goggles and gloves to avoid injuries or accidents.
Installing the First Row
Place the laminate boards along the wall. Remember that each product requires expansion space—use spacers for accuracy.
Installing the Second Row
Interlock the boards using the click-lock system. Use a tapping block and laminate mallet to secure the flooring. For a stable and professional look, begin the second row with a half or one-third cut piece to create a natural staggered pattern.
Installing the Third Row and Beyond
Continue laying laminate in a staggered pattern until the floor is complete.
Finishing Floating Floors
Install the correct transition pieces to complete the project.
Tip for DIY installers: Order the right transition pieces before finishing to avoid delays.
How to Install Flooring with Glue-Down Method
Remove the quarter round or baseboard before you begin. Apply flooring adhesive with a trowel and carefully lay each plank in place. Follow manufacturer instructions for drying and sealing.
