How to Select Carpet for Your Home

Choosing the Right Carpet | Naperville & S Barrington Carpet Guide

The most important decision in selecting carpet is choosing the right color:

Choosing the Right Carpet Color

Choosing the right carpet color is the most difficult decision for customers, for several reasons. It can be tough to visualize the color in a large space, judging from a tiny swatch. A color change can have a dramatic effect, and sometimes even though a change is desired, it can be a bit scary. Occasionally, customers have a hard time because the color they like doesn’t suit their lifestyle.

How to Select Carpet Color for Your Room?

  • Do not try to choose your carpet color in the store! Looking at the color in your home, in the room or area where the carpet will be installed, is the most important step you can take when selecting your carpet color.
  • Ask the salesperson for a sample of the carpet that you can take home. Every Naperville flooring company will provide you with a sample, even if it is a small swatch in a sample book. Our mobile Naperville flooring showroom is packed with hundreds of samples that let you see the color in your home. SCV Floorsmith is a leader in helping homeowners with choosing the right carpet color, and our designers can help you pick the best match.
  • The best way to get a feel for the color is to leave the sample in place for a day or two. That will give you the opportunity to view the color in all types of lighting (during the day in the sunlight, and at night with the indoor lights turned on). Look at the sample often but try not to stare at it. Just glance at it every time you enter the room.
  • Neutral colors are the biggest sellers in carpeting. Carpet has a big impact in a room, and a bright color in a large expanse can be overpowering.
  • You are best to keep the color on the floor neutral, and use brighter or bolder colors in other décor.
  • Carpet has dye lots – meaning the color may vary slightly from one roll to another. Usually, the difference is very minor and barely detectable. However, manufacturers do allow for differences, and it is not considered a defect.
  • The carpet color can alter the entire feel of a room, so be sure to select your carpet color carefully. Think about how trends may change over the years, and be sure the color you love today will still appeal to you later.

Understanding Carpet Fiber Types – What Type of Carpet Fiber is Best?:

The second most important factor in purchasing the right carpet is the fiber type.

The top four carpet fiber types used by Naperville flooring companies today are Nylon, Polypropylene, Polyester, and Wool. SCV Floorsmith will discuss each of their individual pros and cons so you can decide what type of carpet fiber is best for your home.

Types of Carpet Fiber

1. NYLON is utilized in approximately 65% of the carpet sold in the U.S.

PROS:

  • Very durable with excellent performance characteristics.
  • Strong resiliency and good yarn memory to hold twist.
  • Easy to clean and often treated for stain resistance.
  • Resistant to soil and mildew.
  • Excellent choice for heavy-traffic households or commercial facilities.
  • Long-lasting with continuous filament fibers that minimize shedding.

CONS:

  • Typically more expensive than other fibers.
  • Can fade in areas with heavy sun exposure.
  • May show heavy vacuum marks.

2. POLYESTER’s versatility as a carpet fiber type continues to grow. Polyester fiber produces some of the most beautiful colorations available.

PROS:

  • Exceptionally soft, making it ideal for thick cut pile styles.
  • Naturally stain- and fade-resistant.
  • Excellent color clarity and retention.
  • Easy to clean and resists water-soluble stains.
  • Made from recycled consumer products.

CONS:

  • High pile with low density can flatten.
  • Susceptible to pilling, shedding, and oil-based stains.

3. POLYPROPYLENE (Olefin) makes up about 30% of the fiber used in U.S. carpet manufacturing today. It is the fastest-growing type of carpet fiber in Naperville.

PROS:

  • Very inexpensive to produce.
  • Extremely resistant to stains, fading, and moisture.
  • Solution-dyed, meaning color is built in during production.
  • Can be cleaned with bleach.
  • Resistant to sun fading.

CONS:

  • Not recommended for heavy traffic areas.
  • Limited color selection.
  • Can crush easily in high-use spaces.

4. WOOL remains a premium fiber in the flooring industry. Because it is the most expensive type of carpet fiber, it is generally used in luxury carpets and area rugs.

PROS:

  • Provides a soft, warm, and comfortable feel.
  • Ages well and is easy to clean.

CONS:

  • Lacks natural resistance to moisture and abrasion.
  • Holds up to 10 times its weight in moisture, making it susceptible to shrinking, mold, and mildew.

With this information, you now understand both how to select carpet and what type of carpet fiber is best for your needs.
